Why This Matters: Homograph Attacks

Cyrillic characters like а е о с р х look identical to English a e o c p x but have completely different Unicode values. Cybercriminals exploit this in homograph attacks (also called IDN spoofing).

Real Attack Examples:

  • • аррӏе.com — looks like apple.com but uses Cyrillic а, р, ӏ, е
  • • раураӏ.com — looks like paypal.com but uses Cyrillic р, а, у, ӏ
  • • gооgӏе.com — looks like google.com but uses Cyrillic о, ӏ, е

How to stay safe: Always check the URL in your browser's address bar. Modern browsers show punycode (xn--...) for mixed-script domains. When in doubt, type the URL manually or use bookmarks.
